Paola and Antonella dream: Il Tabacchificio
Ever since little girls, our dream has always been to come back in some way to our origins. In early 2000, during a holiday in Salento, a friend showed us this ruin, an old tobacco factory, where our grandmother worked for a period. We loved the project and struggled to realise it. Now Il Tabacchificio is a family run 4 star hotel where our clients are welcomed as beloved friends, in a relaxing atmosphere (see Tripadvisor review). Many of our staff are very attached to this place because they are relatives of the old workers who were employed here.
Il Tabacchificio was implanted during the Fascist era, when the cultivation of the plant Levantine was widespread. Inside the building there were several work rooms, each designed for a different purpose, such as pressing, drying and packing materials, and also the room where every breastfeeding mother could care for their children. The activity of the tobacco factory lasted until 1989 when a deep crisis in the sector forced the owner to permanently shut down.
We began the renovation in 2002, focusing on the recovery of the original structure of the building materials and furnishings, using local craftsmen and artisans . We were helped by Francesco Spada, a master of design, who lives and works in Lecce, whose style is a mixture of modern and traditional. We have accurately chosen together all the materials, colours, furnishings and accessories. They are enhanced by the collection of art photographs of Andrea Morgante representing a route-guidance within the hotel. During the renovation a swimming pool and a garden have been integrated to the building, for relaxing with a glass of wine or an aperitivo and for a perfect meal al fresco!
